"The iQ50 has a lovely spacious quality, with fine imaging and a decent measure of transparency." Hi-Fi Choice magazine.
The KEF iQ50 uses many of KEF's highly developed technologies to create a compact floorstander of true refinement. As with previous KEF iQ speakers, the appeal of the iQ50 starts with the cabinet. The back and sides of the cabinet form a continuous curve - giving the iQ50 a number of advantages. Firstly, it's more rigid than a traditional 3-piece construction. Secondly, the shape should also help diffuse standing waves inside the cabinet, thereby giving it a more open and less congested sound. The cabinet innovation continues with a semi-exposed top woofer. By placing the woofer and tweeter units so high in the cabinet, the sound staging is improved - noticeable with both music and film soundtracks.
The KEF iQ50 uses another KEF technology to great effect; that of the Uni-Q drive unit. Essentially, this involves positioning the treble unit within the throat of the woofer, thus creating a single point source for sound across the frequency spectrum. The end result of this is a broader, more cohesive sound that once experienced makes it hard to go back to conventional speakers. With the iQ50, KEF has improved the tweeter with a new "tangerine" wave guide system. This veined tweeter housing helps the treble integrate more smoothly with the mid-range. At the other end of the scale, the long-throw bass woofer provides a rich, well integrated bass that's pleasingly free from "boom".
Coming complete with a redesigned plinth, the KEF iQ50's might be small but they're also perfectly stable. With a smart, black ash effect finish, the KEF iQ50 looks every bit as good as it sounds. The iQ50's also happen to be extremely well made and feature some neat touches such as wire-linked bi-wiring posts and a front port with foam bung. This foam insert lets you tailor the sound to best balance the acoustics of your room.
If you're looking for a small, floorstanding speaker with a wide yet refined sound stage, the KEF iQ50 is the perfect choice.
